The Magazine Debate

Thursday, November 8, 2007
A friend of mine had posted this last night and as always, I laugh - because Liz is freaking funny.

After I took the time to fully read through - I surprisingly couldn't shut up on my response. Since today is Fashion Conscious Thursday - all of this is fitting:

I can see where you are going with this, however... it's not fair to discount all of the magazines that have tried to do what you are talking about - (Oprah, Self, Shape, Marie Claire, Jane - which went under) without acknowledging that they all started out how you say, and eventually had to adjust to fit the market of which they are targeting.

Orprah will always be huge because.. hello, it's oprah. I think that takes care of all of the middle aged chicks that love food (Rachel Ray), analyzing people (Dr. Phil) interior design (hooray! - that gay guy that is awesome who's name I can't remember), and any of us who like crying at Halmark commercials once in awhile.

Then you have Working Woman - who tailors to people like you and me that are independent lasses that work our tails off to get a leg up in our company. Most photo content in here is general - run of the mill crap that really isn't all that offensive.

You also can't forget (regarding Settled) Working Mother - which I actually get in the mail for whatever odd reason. Helpful tips on how to be a mom and a wife and all that stuff.

There are also magazines like, hmm.... W, Elle, Vogue, etc. where most of your pencil thin waifs reside because they are high fashion magazines - targeted at high fashion individuals, or those interested in (wait for it...) HIGH FASHION. Who wears high fashion? Models. Who displays the product on runway and billboard? Models. It amazes me that people get offended by this because most high fashion designers are gay men - they pick their models accordingly: women that have no boobs, butt, curves because who do they sort of resemble with body types as such? YOUNG MEN/BOYS. So why are we trying to be cute for gay men, again?

Magazines like Cosmo - i'm surprised they still sell - but I guess that's easy to observe when it's tailored toward insecure females that complain about being fat when they're not - or can't stand to be alone even for a day at a time without having some dumb idiot man to walk beside them (in which case, your sample articles you have listed before could be extremely plausable!).

Cosmo does recycle articles. I used to buy this magazine every month in high school and when I compared a 2000 issue to one in 1996, I noticed the repetitiveness. Same Article, one new tip, different photo. COME ON.

I guess my main point is that magazines don't really force anyone to look at the advertizements/models/articles. We've kind of forced them into advertising that way.

Magazines out there like what you're talking about do exist - you just never hear about them because the general public isn't obsessed with average looking women (those girls watch Tyra religiously, because Tyra's a big girl now and won't shut the F up about how she is the way she is, and how she got there, and how great she is and literally HOLDS PARADES for "SO WHAT! - I'M a SIZE 18 and I DON"T HAVE A WEAVE!" I'm not kidding). I"ve never had a guy come up to me and say "I want to date you. You look soooo average!" Nor do I ever make an attempt to look beautiful just to have my friends say, "You look ok today."

We're obsessed with perfection and judging people when they don't meet our own individual standard. That's why Magazines like US have specific sections on "When Bad Clothes happen to good People" and "They're Just Like Us!" because we like to relate.

Reality shows are perfect because the pretty people with psychological problems are cast on every damn show so we can think them perfect at first, only to be happy we don't look like them because someone that looks like that is so messed up in the head.

I may have to put this on my blog my response was so long hahahaha. Good post, Liz.

Fashion Smashion

Thursday, October 11, 2007
I would so much love to be miss cutie pie in cute new gap clothes but i never have the funds. Sooooo lame.

The sad thing about finances is sometimes... when you're a girl... the less money you have - the more inclined you are to just...keep...shopping.

"Just keep shopping. Just keep shopping."

So yeah, i'm probably going to be buying some dresses this weekend...

Screw fashion... i want those cupcakes.

Unfashionably Late

Thursday, October 4, 2007
Today's topic has been lax because i've had an unfashionable attitude all day ---

it's either due to the headache - the mass marketing campaign at work (and no cooperation from the software) - or the fact that after buying a new puffy-sleeved turtle neck and pairing it with my goucho pants - i just realized that 80s really have come back into style.

Next I'll be combing the sides of my hair out to the side and spraying them into place -- accompanying the back with banana clips.

Nooooooooooooooooo!

America's Next Top Hoo Hah

Sammath: Oook. They made them do a shopping challenge at Old Navy.

Raq: hahahaha

Sammath: Sweet. $100. At Old Navy - that has the worst line of clothes for this season ever right now. Great. I"ll go buy a bunch of jewelry and panties.

Raq: I wish J Crew would sponsor.

Sammath: And then they could do their challenge there - so they can actually have cool clothes.

Oh good. Bitch won a $1,000 shopping spree at Old Navy. You can buy a lot of crap for that. And by crap - i mean crap, ugly ass fall clothes. Go for the Purses!

Sammath: Oh my god. Look at Miss Jay's Hair.

He looks like a Golden Girl.

Raq: I like Miss Jay's Hair!

Sammath: Ok. This is a No-Smoking Season. Tyra's banned smoking. What a bitch. What if we threw her on a show and told her she couldn't be self-involved anymore. She'd never talk.

Sammath:You know... I don't know about this whole Tyra Empire anymore.

Raq: I know. Tyra's out of control.

Sammath: Seriously. We should start our own show. It could be like the new Absolutlely Fabulous. I'll be the short one that drinks alot and you can be the tall, skinny bimbo. But you have to bleach your hair.

Raq: And we could wear clothes that showcase our vagina armpits.

And I could be the token cripple. With the messed up leg.

Sammath: Right. And when I ask you to explain why your leg is so messed up you can be like, "Well, I got this horrible disease and I was just -

Raq: Don't forget to cry.

Sammath: "Walking around and really upset and -"

And then I could interupt you and be all, "Lord, girl - when I was 6, I totally stubbed my toe! And I know you can relate, because I"m Tyra and i've done everything and said everything and i'm queen of the universe."

Raq: hahahahaha

Why Not To Wear BellyShirts When You're Chubby

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Raquel: i was at the park last week with my nephew and he asked some hoochie in a tummy shirt if she was having a baby boy or a baby girl. I was so embarrassed.

Sami: ahahahahaha. what'd she do?

Raquel: She was like, "Im not having a baby. I just eat a lot of junk food and god made me big."

Raquel - and then! My nephew was like

Sami: hahahahhaha.

Raquel: "No....i think its a baby girl." I was mortified

Sami: hahahahahahaha

Raquel: seriously

Sami: hahahahahaha

Raquel: hahaha

Sami: you have the funniest stories

Raquel: And i felt so bad on the way home and [my boyfriend] was like, "its her fault for flaunting her chub like that." I was so embarrassed.

Sami: She probably went home and drowned her embarassment in hohos

You know why?

Cause she's a ho.

No No No

Thursday, September 13, 2007
I actually think about how I dressed today because after sleeping in past the ability to shower - I had to throw together some fancy updo and makeup in four minutes - then dress in less. My hair actually rocks today. Surprising.

Given my then current mood, I had opted for a super comfy dressy/casual with slip on flats and a hoody - and remembered I'd have to change just before walking out the door because we had a client coming in (a very rare occurance).

I've never been very New York Fashionista...so I'm sorry - unless I ever weigh 120 lbs and have a million dollars to blow at The Limited - I'll probably never dress this way.

I have my own quirk style that's always something nice downplayed by something you'd snuggle into at home. It's usually practical (to fit my schedule) and needs to have the ability transform from dress to going out to scootering or... whatever.

I hate having to go home and change.

At our new office, I sit right by our office door and watch people walk by on a regular basis - I'm the friendly(?) face by the only door open in the hallway - which actually ends up being kind of obnoxious because most people have wandered into the wrong building and end up asking me for directions, to use my phone, and then to vent for 10 minutes about how they're mad the building didn't use correct signage, how they're so embarassed (it's really not a big deal) or that they're angry that a business moved and failed to alert them. I had a cute little old lady giving me the "what for" for a solid 20 minutes (Ok, not me... but to me, about the company) a few weeks ago for the latter.

In that time, she also managed to go through her perse, re-organize and have an entire conversation without me in it.

Either way, A lot of people walk by - and the lot of people have lots of different outfits.

The men are always decked in nice suits... One older guy always wears this old grandpa sweater, which I love, but I do not love when he walks by after a visit to the restroom and passes gas three times at the loudest possible decibal, because he then assumes that along with my lack of smell, i must have some lack of hearing. How can I not look at him funny whenever he strolls back by with his hands in his pockets?

I recall seeing a bright yellow pants suit one day on one of the gals (actually - really cute - but I could never pull it off).
Another is always so pulled together and classy - the kind you'd want to be your mom if you didn't already have a fashionably gorgeous parent.
A third wears cute skirts that I always love, but always look kind of akward for her body... I'm always re-evaluating in my mind what could or could not look better on her... but kind of thinking that if we ever actually talked - we'd probably be best friends.

One I always notice is a tall, asian girl at the end of the hall that always dresses pretty cute...kind of like - modern funk on a budget.

It started that this was the only thing I thought about her, until I saw her more often than neccessary. One day, she walked past about 10 times within the course of 30 minutes, speaking extremely quickly on her cell phone in some foreign language. I had guessed something was not right.

Then a week later - had three kids with her - that seemed to be hers, but how does a girl that seemingly weighs 105 pounds not show any sign of previous pregnancy pounds?

Now, I"m just irritated, because I don't know if she has the smallest bladder on the face of the planet, or she just really likes to get up and walk much, but she wears clunky shoes that never actually fit and every time she walks by, drags her ass to the bathroom.

You remember when your mom told you to pick up your f'in feet feet when you walk?
Well, PICK UP YOUR FREAKIN' FEET, GIRL!

Because while you work your outfits, you're not workin those shoes, and I often wonder if... you're working your job.

A Letter to The Gap Corporation

Raq: Dear Gap,

Why do you still make pants like these:

Sammath: Seriously, Gap.

Raq: And you know that girls' body is probably bangin'. And they make a model look like that!

Sami: But it looks like a 15 year old boy body.

Raq::Yeah! A DORKY 15-year-old boy.

Think about it.

Heart, Raq & Sammath.
